Pranab stands by Shah Rukh

Kolkata, Feb 8 : Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, who faced the Shiv Sena's ire for saying he would have liked to include Pakistani players in his Kolkata Knight Riders team for the the third season of the Indian premier League (IPL), Monday got support from union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Answering queries from the media here on the issue, Mukherjee said nobody can tamper with anybody's freedom of speech and expression, which was a fundamental right in India.
"Freedom of speech and expression in any form is a fundamental right. In India, fundamental right is guaranteed by the constitution. Nobody can tamper with it," Mukherjee said.

Keep rolling: Ranbir Kapoor's skating spree in New York!

By Subhash K Jha, Feb 8, 2010 : It was meant to be Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor ice-skating together at the Central Park in New York for 'Anjaana Anjaani' ...the first film couple since John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale in 2001's 'Serendipity' to get the privilege of being captured on camera gliding on ice at that location.

Alas, filmmaker proposes. Actress disposes. Priyanka had to return to India for four days to promote her new film 'Pyaar Impossible'.
The field, rather the icing rink, was left clear for Ranbir Kapoor who for three consecutive nights skated non-stop all night in Central Park.
Not just that Ranbir spent all of the New Year weekend in New York learning how to skate.
Says producer Sajid Nadiadwala, "Ranbir's dedication to get it absolutely right just took our breath away. He is relentless in focusing on getting it right. He had to skate alone because Priyanka had to return to Mumbai. He skated for three nights from 11 pm to 4 am in minus-6 degree temperature in Central Park."
It was important to can all the footage in those three nights.
Says Sajid, "We were the first film unit since 'Serendipity' to get permission to shoot in Central Park's icing rink and we had limited time. But the weather was freezing. We were worried how we'd manage it. We underestimated Ranbir's passion for excellence. He skated non-stop all night for three nights."
It was only after those three nights of super-frozen weather conditions that Ranbir finally fell on his bed with utter exhaustion. He's gradually recovering from the marathon ice-sport.
Says Sajid, "The footage we've captured of Ranbir ice-skating shows his ballet-like elegance and precision. I don't think we've ever got anything like this before."
Apparently Priyanka had a sneak peek at the footage of Ranbir ice-skating and has expressed a desire to do some of it herself. Apparently Ranbir and Priyanka don't just play a combative couple in 'Anjaana Anjaani', they're also ruthlessly competitive while shooting.
Says a source, "It's hard to say which of the two rushes to the monitor first after every shot. There's a minor marathon race on location after every shot."
From New York 'Anjaana Anjaani' now moves to Las Vegas where Ranbir and Priyanka intend to out-gamble one another.

I was recognized with the sex-talk show -Sameer Kochhar

Feb 8, 2010: TV anchor turned actor Sameer Kochhar who made his Bollywood debut in film 'Zeher' is now coming back on the screen in the forthcoming film 'Hide N Seek'.
Moser Baer Entertainment and Idiot Box's film 'Hide N Seek' is the directorial debut of Shawn Arranha and produced conjointly by Apoorva Lakhia and Laxmi Singh. The film stars Sameer Kochhar, Purab Kohli, Arjan Bajwa, Ayaz Khan, Mrinalini Sharma and former Miss Earth Amruta Patki. In a brief chat with Sameer, he opens up on his role on the film and future projects...
Tell us something about 'Hide N Seek'. What's your character in the film?
I'm playing the role of 'Abhimanyu' who's the son of a famous industrialist and brother of Om (Purab Kohli) in the film. Abhimanyu is the neglected older son, always jealous of Om as he's the apple of his parents' eye. Basically the films is based on 6 childhood friends who start playing the game of hide and seek on a cold Christmas night but as they grow up, they find themselves playing the same game in a fatal way which changes their lives forever.
How does it change their lives forever?
(Laughs) You want me to tell you the climax of my film? Seriously watch it! It's a mind-boggling film.
All your co-stars in the film are more or less of the same age including director Shawn Arranha. How was it working with Shawn?
I think Shawn is fantastic with his directorial skills. After a long time, audience would be able to see a good suspense flick and obviously the credit of a good suspense film always goes to the director.
From a TV anchor to actor, which one do you enjoy the most- small screen or big screen?
Well television and films both have a different charm and you cannot compare the two! I was 17 when I started off my career in Jain TV but people started recognizing me only when I hosted a sex talk show along with Kamal Sidhu on Zoom TV.
Did you also host the IPL matches?
Yes that's true! I've hosted both the seasons of IPL matches and I thoroughly enjoyed as I'm a huge cricket buff! My first cricket show was for kids on Hungama TV called 'Indoor Cricket Tournament'.
Tell us about your upcoming films?
My upcoming films are 'Chase', 'Chargesheet' and 'Gandhi Se Pehle Gandhi'.

Papa Pankaj Kapoor ready to be surprised by sonny Shahid Kapoor

By Subhash K Jha, Feb 8, 2010: The original plan was to only direct his first film and let his very talented son Shahid Kapoor take the lead.

But now giving in to pressure from all around him Pankaj Kapoor has decided to make an appearance in his directorial debut. "It would be an Alfred Hitchcockian kind of fleeting appearance. But I'd largely like to concentrate on making the film and stay behind the camera."
Speaking excitedly about working with his son in 'Mausam', Pankaj says, "The idea was to do something meaty and challenging. We should be starting in another 2-3 months. We're into pre-production. I've written a lot of scripts which I couldn't direct and could only star in. When Shahid became an actor he expressed a desire to be directed by me. I thought it'd be wonderful to work with my own son. But I signed him only after I saw the potential in him that I was ready to direct him. We've been working on the script for three years. In the meanwhile a really wonderful thing has happened. Shahid became a big star. I'm very proud of him as his father. And Shahid's stardom is a happy happening for 'Mausam'."
Pankaj is not apprehensive about people's expectations from the father-son duo. "I know people would be curious to know what we're making together. That would be a big USP for me. Shahid has great potential. People have always seen him as a chocolate-box hero. But in 'Kaminey' we could see another side of him. Shahid's USP are his dancing skills and fluent diction. For 'Mausam' I required an actor with range. I've a gut feeling my son is going to surprise not just the audience, but also me."
Beyond this Pankaj is reluctant to talk about 'Mausam', "It's a love story and we don't want any of the details being picked up by other filmmakers. I plan to bring my own sensibilities together with Shahid's. It's rather sad that I've been dubbed an offbeat actor. But whenever given an opportunity I've done mainstream cinema. I've nothing against commercial cinema as long as the rendering of the story is sensible. I've learnt so much watching the commercial greats. I hope to use all that I've learnt from them into my own 'Mausam'. If the producers are spending crores on my film I better get it back for them."
We don't get to see enough of Pankaj on-screen.
Laughs the picky actor, "I do very selective work. The problem is producers have their own rhythm and pace for releasing a film. I did two films in the last one year Bhavna Talwar's 'Happi' and Rajiv Mehra's 'Office Office'. I played the character on television for 5-6 years. Playing the common man is easy for me. I come from a middleclass family. My father was a professor. It was an academic family. The day-to-day problems in 'Office Office' are all familiar to me. For the movie version of 'Office Office' we've moved out of the sets into various cities like Delhi and Hardwar. I've stopped thinking about the film. Once one finishes acting in a film there's nothing one can do about it."
In 'Happi' Pankaj plays a role inspired by Charlie Chaplin.
Says Pankaj, "I wouldn't even dream of comparing myself to Chaplin! He was a genius. 'Happi' is the story of a nondescript man in the city. There're very few dialogues in the film. Yes the story and character are Chaplinesque. But he and his films were way superior, yaar!"
'Office Office' is an adaptation of the long-running television serial of the same name. Says Pankaj, "While in the serial I had to play many different characters, in the film I had to carry just one character throughout. I'm fortunate to get substantial roles. I've built up a reputation for turning down insubstantial roles. For a year now I've said no to all acting assignments because of the film I'm directing. I've just been writing and preparing for 'Mausam'."
Incidentally the title 'Mausam' for Pankaj Kapoor's film may change. "We'll try and find an alternative name. I know the association with the film by Gulzar Saab called 'Mausam' is too strong. The format of that film was inspired by Ingmar Bergman's 'Wild Strawberries'. That 'Mausam' is far superior to what I'm trying to achieve in my first film as director."

Preity Zinta peps up business school

By Subhash K Jha, Feb 8, 2010: The pretty actress Preity Zinta is all done with her course in the prestigious Harvard business school is all set to dabble in various aspects of the entertainment industry, including production.
Narrating the light moments of her studies at Harvard Preity laughs and says, "The Indians in the faculty did recognize me eventually. They were taken aback that I was coming to Harvard. But they were discreet. They'd come up and say. 'Oh my God, what're you doing here? Why aren't you doing movies any more?'"
Apparently the Bollywood fever caught up with the actress at the serious business school eventually, as she narrates, "At the gym on the campus I saw a work-out dance class for cardio exercises and when I went there they were dancing to Bollywood stuff including my 'Where's the party tonight'. When I joined them the dance instructor said, 'You really move your hips well.' I had the best time of my life."

Purab Kohli is not scared

Feb 8, 2010: Purab Kohli in his forthcoming film 'Hide N Seek' plays one of the six friends whose life turns upside down because of an incident, which has occurred six years ago. The incident also leads his ladylove to leave the town due to which he is depressed in life.

Purab finds his reel-life character to be poles-apart from what he is in real-life. He says, "To get trapped in a limited space and not be aware of who is trying to kill you is quite spooky, which is actually the situation of my character in the film. However, in real-life I would have stayed alert and protect myself. I am not someone who will get frightened and agitated as easily as my character 'Om' in the movie; I can give few punches back! I would not die without giving a tough fight."
Well, that sounds scary and interesting too. Nevertheless, hope audience would like Purab's reel-life character as much as they like him in real.

"Simple, elegant, convenient and with its own characteristic charm and above all - air conditioned at all times. The fall of the main design as a strip down the front to be positioned on the right hip and just around the right knee. Rules of culture," he added.

'I am an Idiot': Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Flush with the success of 3 Idiots, Vidhu Vinod Chopra is back to the sets...all set to start work on his next project Broken Horses. The filmmaker in conversation with Sreya Basu From 'Sazaa-e-Maut' to '3 Idiots', Vidhu Vinod Chopra has always been associated with 'good' cinema...
That's because I am an 'Idiot'. I follow my heart and make films that I want to make. I am not concerned about what others are doing. I make films that I like and believe that people will like.
According to you, how do 'good' films happen?
Good films don't happen, you have to make them. You have to dedicate two-three years on the script...then, the pre-production, shooting, post production hazards...it requires lots of hard work and dedication.
But then, the efforts do get heavily paid off at the box office and award ceremonies...
True. But I sincerely believe that it's the duty of filmmakers to make good films. If people are spending money to watch a film on Friday, it has to be a good one. This is the one thought that always plays on my mind when I work on a film...be it Munnabhai MBBS or Lage Raho Munnabhai or 3 Idiots, or Parineeta or Ekalavya. If the film is bakwaas (nonsense) then even if Aamir Khan tours round the world to promote it, no one will be able to save it.
Having said that, tell us honestly, don't you get panic attacks before the release of your films?
Rajkumar Hirani and I, in fact, everyone who works with our production house (Vinod Chopra Films) are trained in making films within budget. We make good films because we make films within our budget. So we don't get panicked thinking about the fate of the films. By God's grace most of our films do really well. Now 3 Idiots has rewritten the Indian Box Office history. But even if the film won't have worked, there was no reason for us to get heart attacks.
What are your next projects?
There's Broken Horses, Munna Bhai Chale Amrika, Pachaasvi Saalgirah, Ferrari Ki Sawaari and Taalismaan. Generally at Vinod Chopra films, we plan for the next 3-4 years and then work accordingly.
Earlier, you said you want to raise funds for National Innovation Foundation through 3 Idiots. What is the current status of the project?
See, I don't want to confuse the marketing of the film with this, unlike one Mr Bhagat (Chetan Bhagat) who believes in cheap publicity stints. I don't want people to think that we want to start this foundation to promote our film. Having said that, now that the film has run its course, we are very serious about it and hopefully we will have a foundation. But I don't want to confuse what I want to do for the country, for the people, with the marketing of my film. At this moment there are people who are working on the modality on how this foundation will work, and once we have it we will call it the 'Idiot Foundation'. This foundation will try and help the idiots of the world, particularly our country. It will take them to where they deserve to go. But I will speak more on this once the foundation is formed. I am glad that you know about it.
As you mention Chetan Bhagat; what will you tell him if the two of you come face-to-face somewhere?
For rest of my life I don't want to meet Chetan Bhagat.

Mumbai belongs to all: Shahrukh Khan

Mumbai, Feb 8 : Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan said Mumbai belongs to everyone and rather everyone who came to Mumbai belongs to the city.

" Yes, it belongs to everyone," he told CNN-IBN in an interview by Rajdeep Sardesai aired on Monday.
"Mumbai doesn't belong to me, I belong to Mumbai and that's the way I see it," he said.
Shiv Sena has earlier threatened to stall the release and screening of his new film My Name is Khan for his support to the inclusion of Pakistani players in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
He said everybody who has come to Mumbai from outside, they belong to Mumbai.
"I think I am owned by Mumbai and I would also like to say this very, very clearly, that the last thing I want is anyone getting physically and emotionally damaged in this city, so anyone who tries to do it to curb a Mumbai sentiment which they assume somebody has, because they're not from here, they're doing exactly the same thing, hurting the Mumbaikars and Mumbai only," he said.
Supporting CNN-IBN's Mumbai for All campaign, he said: "Like everyone else, but you know, I don't know about that ideology, but everyone says Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra, so it comes as a subset. So I don't know where the question is there of anyone in Mumbai thinking otherwise or in the country thinking otherwise."
"It can be 'Jai Hind, Jai Dilli', it can be 'Jai Hind, Jai Bihar', 'Jai Hind, Jai Gujarat', 'Jai Hind, Jai Kerala' , 'Jai Hind, Jai Bengal' or 'Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra'...," he said.
The King Khan said he was bad at picking up language and so he cannot speak Marathi well.
"I am quite ashamed that I've not been able to learn it in 20 years, I am quite slow, I am not good with languages," he said.
"But, my children know it, its a natural progression," he said.
He said whatever he is today is because of Mumbai and how he can be anti-Mumbai.
He said he would speak in mind next time for any cause in which he feels he has an opinion.

Shah Rukh and I are connected to each other: Karan Johar

Mumbai, Feb 8 : It is common knowledge that 'My Name Is Khan' is going through a storm. However, in the midst of it all, Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar are standing by each other. The director strongly believes that they are connected to each other more as brothers than being business partners.

"'My Name Is Khan' is a film which is a strong emotional connect for both Shah Rukh and I. He and I co-producing the film has nothing to do with money," said Karan, whose Dharma Productions has made the film in collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment.
"We are too connected to each other and when it comes to a family, you don't question their close association. Do you question someone who is working with his brother in one assignment after another? Shah Rukh and I may be having different surnames but that doesn't take away from the strong sense of brotherhood that we both carry," he added.
What makes him supremely confident about his life-long relationship with Shah Rukh? Specially when Farah Khan had to move from Shah Rukh to Akshay Kumar for "Tees Maar Khan".
"See, its not just the matter of directing a film which would have him as an actor. Tomorrow, I may not be directing a film with him but the fact is that both of us will always be a part of each other's production house. In some way or another, in whatever capacity, we would be working with each other," said Karan.
Releasing Friday, the film also stars Kajol and is set in the post 9/11 US.
Clarifying yet another misconception about the film, Karan says "My Name Is Khan" is not an issue-based film.
"Please let me set the record straight that 'My Name Is Khan' is not an issue based film. Instead it's a human drama about a couple. The film will make you smile and result in tears in your eyes. It's a film which connects with you and is totally emotionally based."
He also clarifies on the religious connotation saying: "By no means am I aspiring to take forward the baton of an issue. Instead I am just using it as a part of the narrative. The film doesn't have any religious or spiritual undertone to it but basically sends across the message of humanity, so let's watch the film for its worth."

'I played male parts in school': Shabana Azmi

Shabana Azmi is one actor who is synonymous with good cinema. Sreya Basu caught up with the actor-cum-social activist during her breezy visit to Kolkata on films, family and the communist upbringing

You recently launched the English version of Kaifi Aur Main and also presented a theatrical collage of the biological account in Kolkata. Can you say more about that?

As you know, Kaifi Aur Main is my mother Shaukat Azmi's memoir about her relationship with my father (Kaifi Azmi)...a relationship of love, friendship. The theatrical collage is based on the reminiscences of my parents. Scripted by Javed (Akhtar), the narrative traces Kaifi and Shaukat Azmi's journey of life from his childhood in Mijwan...their unusual romance culminating in a marriage that lasted 55 years... life in Bombay in the 1950s...the Progressive Writer's Movement... my father's social and cultural activism...his path-breaking work as a lyricist in Hindi cinema... his fight against life-threatening illness...and their relentless fight to make Mijwan a place of progress... Kaifi Aur Main is also a celebration of his poetry and his unparalleled contribution to Indian Cinema.

What comes to your mind when you remember your childhood days?

I remember happy times. I grew up in a CPI (Communist Party of India) family. Till the age of nine I used to live in a commune ...it was a little better than a commune; this was in Khetwadi (Mumbai). Every comrade had a room each. The drawing room was the big Red Flag Hall where all the meetings took place. I was a bit spoilt in the sense that I didn't just belong to my family but to all the families that lived there...we used to go and see the Republic Day lights in a truck and celebrate Holi together.

And then you came to Juhu...

Yes. Then the theatre influence took over greatly. My mother was a great time actor with Prithvi Theatre.

When did you decide to become an actor?

I had always been acting in school. I used to play all the male parts like that of Mark Anthony. My friends used to say that I will become a Hindi film actress when I grow up. But I didn't use to take them seriously. It was when I was in Xavier's that I started enjoying acting...and also won the inter-collegiate awards. Then I joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.

How did Ankur happen?

I had gone to see Shyam Benegal and within about 2 minutes he not only offered me Ankur, but also Nishant. I still can't understand why!

Was it a conscious decision to try out both mainstream and parallel cinema?

I don't think so. It just happened that both Ankur and Ishq Ishq Ishq did well and I started getting offers from both kinds of cinema.

When it comes to women-centric roles, you have always sported very strong characters like that in Arth and Godmother. Was it because of the background you came from?

It was mostly because of the background I came from. I was always used to see women being treated as equals. My father had always been working for the upliftment of women. The scripts, later, provided me that scope.

Which has been the favourite of all your films so far?

I am extremely critical of my films. Whenever I watch any of my films, I tend to notice only the mistakes.

So, which is the film where you have made the least 'mistakes'?

I would say Deepa Mehta's Fire and Mrinal Sen's Khandahar.

How would you want people to know you-an actor, a small-time politician, a social activist, or wife of a writer?

An actor.

Ever thought of trying your hand in writing?

When a woman writes, it's a personal journey. Everything is inspired from what is experienced, or observed. I don't know about future, but at the moment I am daughter of a writer (Kaifi Azmi) and wife of a writer (Javed Akhtar).

Revising lyrics of Noor-e-khuda for My Name is Khan

Feb 2, 2010 : Well don't get the wrong idea here, the sufi song 'Noor-e-khuda' from the film 'My Name is Khan' had its lyrics improvised not because of some moral policing but due to the fact that Karan Johar did not liked the initial verses of the song.

Apparently as the story goes lyricist Niranjan Iyengar says, "The song which is currently being heard is not the original track, but that happens with most of the tracks," adding further, he says, "the original lyrics of the song were stressing a lot on the term Noor-e- khuda which were later scrapped and changed to 'Noor-e khuda ...yun na humse nazre pihra.'"
Well as they say all's well that ends well, it seems 'Noor-e-khuda' sung by the trio of Adnan Sami, Shankar Mahadevan and Shreya Ghoshal has shaped up perfectly well sans the rhetoric.

What made Sunny Deol sweat in Delhi's winter?

New Delhi, Feb 2: Bollywood actor Sunny Deol literally sweated it out in the capital's winter. No, it wasn't due to global warming, but because fans had swamped him here Tuesday. Dressed in a blue jeans, red jacket and sporting a stubble, Sunny almost got crushed in a stampede by fans and media. The actor, who was last seen in dud "Fox" (2009), had to shift spots for breathers before giving bytes to the journalists and photo and autograph opportunities to fans.
"It was just too many people around and was getting hot in there. Mumbai is also very hot but it was just not well kept and not a little balanced," Sunny told IANS, while sitting near a balcony for fresh air.
The actor-turned-filmmaker was in Delhi to launch the third gym under the health club chain - Club Fitline. Apart from being its brand ambassador, he is also on the board of directors of the chain.

Won't bow to Sena protests: SRK

Mumbai, Feb 2: Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan has said that he would not bow down to the Shiv Sena's protests and apologize, CNN IBN reported on Tuesday. The Shiv Sena is displeased because Khan said Pakistani cricketers should be included in the third edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
"I will not cow down to Sena's protests," Khan told the news channel.
"I said whatever I think as a proud, righteous Indian," he said. "I stand on my views on Pakistani players in Indian Premiere League 3," he added.
Twenty Shiv Sainiks were reportedly nabbed by police from near Mannat, Khan's residence in Bandra on Sunday. The activists had planned to demonstrate in front of the actor's bungalow.
"Our leader Balasaheb Thackeray had warned Shah Rukh not to hire Pakistani cricketers. As long as Pakistan continues to sponsor terrorism in India, we will not let any Pakistani player in India," Shiv Sena leader Anil Parab had said.
However, Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil warned Shiva Sena and said, "Shiv Sena will have to pay through its nose if it indulges in ransacking or disturbing theaters screening movies of actor Shah Rukh Khan."
The Shiv Sena has said it would continue its agitation against Khan.

Nana Patekar refuses to be payment for 'Paathshaala'

Feb 2, 2010 : Acclaimed actor Nana Patekar who has always been known for his socially awakening roles refused to accept any fee for 'Paathshaala' and instead insisted that producer Shaira Khan donate the amount to a few charitable trusts that the actor has been involved with.

Confirming the news, producer Shaira Khan says, "Initially, he told us that we should make five cheques to cover his fee for the project. But when it was time to actually hand them over to him, he took us by surprise. He told us to issue the cheques in the names of the charitable organizations."
Adds Shaira, "There is so much hearsay about Nana Patekar and the kind of person he is. But any such thoughts banished from my first meeting with him. For me, he is a sweetheart. He is great fun to work with. Shooting with him made us realize that Nana is a grossly misunderstood man. He will always remain an absolute delight for us."
Nana Patekar who plays a school principal in the 'Paathshaala' was touched by the concept of the film which revolves around the pressures that children face at the hands of our Indian education system these days.
He felt it would be wrong to charge a fee for such a noble cause and thus decided to reach out to the less fortunate sections of society through donations.
Shahid Kapoor, who also plays a pivotal role in the film, has also refused to charge any remuneration for the film.
Well, given the current scenario of the problems surrounding the children, this gesture by Nana and Shahid has surely highlighted their support to the worthy cause.
Presented by Eros International, 'Paathshaala' is directed by Milind Ukey and produced by Shaira Khan (Paperdoll Entertainment). The film's story and screenplay are by Ahmed Khan and music is by Hanif Shaikh. The film stars Nana Patekar, Shahid Kapoor and Ayesha Takia in pivotal roles along with popular child artists Swini Khara, Avika Gor, Ali Haji and Dwij Narendra Yadav.

Farhan Akhtar to have a double role in Karthik Calling Karthik?

By Subhash K Jha, Feb 2, 2010: Farhan Akhtar refuses to divulge whether he has double role in 'Karthik Calling Karthik'.

"All I can tell you is that I play a lonely introvert character down on his luck, unsure and inarticulate. Everyone takes advantage of the guy I play."
Farhan is quick to point out he doesn't play a geek. "Karthik isn't a geek. Something happened in his childhood to make him the way he is. This guy is just an introvert."
All the films that Farhan has been seen in so far have been produced by the actor himself. "I've no issues working for any producer as long as the project ad its backers are rock-solid. An actor's worst nightmare is if his project stalls midway. The thing is, whoever has come with an acting offer wanted me to produce his films. With 'Karthik Calling Karthik' for the first time my company is co-producing a film with a company called Magic Bean. The director Vijay Lalwani came to me with the offer to act and co-produce 'Karthik Calling Karthik'."
Farhan admits he was offered Rohan Sippy's film with Abhishek Bachchan. "I couldn't do it because the dates clashed with Zoya Akhtar's film. I love her script about three friends. The fact that I've done films about male bonding before ('Dil Chahta Hai', 'Rock On') didn't deter me. No one stops to ask how many films about the man-woman relationship are made every year. Then why not more films about male friendship?"
Farhan's next production tentatively titled 'Crooked' does not feature him in the cast. "I'm very happy just being the producer. I've written the dialogues. It's already interestingly cast and didn't need me. While promoting 'Karthik Calling Karthik' I'm also doing pre-production of the sequel to 'Don'."

Ash unsure about 'Laawaris' number in 'Houseful'

New Delhi, Feb 2 : Rumours were rife that Aishwarya Rai will dance to the tunes of hit number 'Apni toh jaise taise', which was originally picturised on her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan, in Sajid Khan's 'Houseful'. But sources close to her say that she is yet to accept the offer.
"Aishwarya has been approached by Sajid Khan but she has yet to revert back to them. She is busy with the shooting of 'Guzaarish', 'Action Replay' and 'Endhiran'," Aishwarya's spokesperson told IANS.
Recent media reports suggested that Sajid Nadiadwala had bought the rights of the song, which is from the 1981 blockbuster "Laawaris" and that he had approached Aishwarya for it.
If at all the actress agrees to do the item number, it would be her third in over a decade-long career. In the past, she featured in item numbers like "Ishq kamina" and "Kajra re" - both the songs have been iconic in their own sense.
While in "Ishq kamina", she teamed up with Shah Rukh Khan, "Kajra re" saw her with Amitabh and Abhishek.

Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol ring NASDAQ opening bell

New York, Feb 2 : Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol have become the first Indian actors to ring the opening bell of the world's biggest stock exchange, NASDAQ, an honour usually reserved for CEOs of major corporations.

The actors who are in the US to promote their upcoming film, "My Name Is Khan" releasing Feb 12, came to NASDAQ and rang in the first trading day of February at 9.30 a.m. Monday at a ceremony broadcast live on many television networks across the globe.
With over 3,700 companies listed, the NASDAQ has more trading volume than any other stock market in the world.
As the star pair made their way to the NASDAQ building in Times square, Shah Rukh said on his twitter account: "Nasdaq will be fun. Have to make sure I reach on time, otherwise will end up being blamed for economic upheaval across the world too... ha ha."
In the film, Khan plays a Muslim Indian with Asperger syndrome (a form of autism) who lives in the US and marries a Hindu single mother, played by Kajol, but their marriage crumbles post-9/11 and he sets out to meet the US president for help in getting her back.
The highly awaited picture reunites Khan and Kajol, who haven't appeared in a film together since "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" in 2001. The film was shot in Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Mumbai. Directed by filmmaker Karan Johar, it's produced by his company, Dharma Productions.
"My Name Is Khan" was reportedly sold to Fox Star Studios last July for a record USD 21 million, the highest price ever paid by a distributor for a Bollywood film.
Under the deal, Fox Star Studios, a joint venture between American film studio 20th Century Fox and India's Star Group, acquired the worldwide marketing and distribution rights to the film. It will be released in North America by Fox Searchlight Pictures, a division of 20th Century Fox.
Meanwhile, Shah Rukh told The Wall Street Journal Monday: "I'm hopeful to make one Hindi film that's seen by the whole world."
"Like, 'Life is Beautiful'," he explained. "It was an Italian film but everyone saw it and loved it."
A year after "Slumdog Millionaire" raked in eight Oscars, Shah Rukh admitted he'd love to top its success. "Nobody knows where a film is going to go when you finish it," he was quoted as saying by the Journal.
"I think this will... touch a lot more people in the Eastern and Western world than any film has done before. I would love it to be a bigger hit than 'Slumdog'."
Asked about plans to cross into Hollywood, Shah Rukh Khan said: "I've never been asked."
He jokingly speculated that it was, perhaps, because he doesn't have Brad Pitt's body and doesn't know kung fu.
"I like that I'm the king of Bollywood though," he told the Journal.

Anchoring is easier than acting: Abhishek Bachchan

By Robin Bansal, New Delhi, Feb 2 : Just two episodes after his debut TV show 'National Bingo Night', Abhishek Bachchan has taken a fancy to anchoring and says it is more enjoyable than acting. Slamming reports that the show is "boring", he says he is looking forward to a second season.
"If the rating is so high, it means something about the show is working. It can't just be my face. If it was just my face then other artists who have been on shows earlier would have got the same rating," Abhishek told IANS in an interview here.
"Anchoring is easier because in acting there are so many other things that come into play," he said. "Here you just have to be yourself," said Abhishek, who was here to promote the show.
"I wanted to do something on television that would have been interactive with my audience and 'Bingo' was like that. There are 200 (people in the) studio audience with whom I interact and then we have the whole home-viewing audience that sits and watches the show. I was really looking to something like that," he added.
The actor further lauded television as a means to reach more people.
"Today we actors just have another platform to do our work on. Television is part of a visual and entertainment medium. Actors have found an opportunity and another platform to connect with the audience," Abhishek told IANS.
So will we see more of Abhishek on the small screen?
"As of now I am only doing 'Bingo'. It's a 13-episode season after which if Colors (the channel that airs the show) renews it, we'll come back with season II," he said.
"Bingo" opened Jan 23 with a TRP of 5.1, the highest for a Bollywood-anchored non-fiction entertainment show since 2008, according to Television Audience Measurement (TAM).
It has beaten the opening ratings of the shows hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty and Rajeev Khandelwal.
Apart from the serial, Abhishek is busy with films like "Raavan", "Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey", "Crooked" and the Hindi adaptation of "The Italian Job".
When asked if all the four Bachchans - his father, mother, wife and himself - would be seen together in a movie or TV show, he told IANS: "Hopefully! As of now, we haven't been approached with anything together. But if we do and we all like it, I'm sure we'll do it."
"Whatever I am today is because of my parents and my family. Whatever I have learnt in life, whether it is personal or professional has been from my parents," he added.
The Bachchans are referred as the first family of Bollywood, but Abhishek doesn't pay heed to such titles.
"We're a family. We are happy about that. Being the first, second or third family doesn't matter to us. That changes every two years," he said.

'Ishqiya'' elbows out 'Rann' at box office

New Delhi, Feb 1 : Vishal Bhardwaj has done it again. After the success of 'Kaminey', his rustic 'Ishqiya' has beaten the Amitabh Bachchan starrer 'Rann' at the box office, thanks to its appealing content.

Both movies released Friday and had star-studded red-carpet premieres in the capital Thursday, but "Ishqiya" took the cake with almost 80 percent collections in the opening weekend. "Rann" got only around 30 percent collections.
"'Ishqiya' has got a strong opening in both Delhi and Uttar Pradesh in both multiplexes and single-screens. It has got around 80 percent business over the initial weekend," Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (cinemas) of Wave Cinemas, told IANS.
"The dialogue delivery in the movie is very good and it is a typical masala movie but the drawback is that everyone might not like it because it has its own class. While 'Rann' is gripping but has managed only around 30 percent opening. There has been no initial for this one. It has its own class but no mass appeal," he added.
Delhi-based distributor Joginder Mahajan also echoed the same.
"'Rann' has fared very poorly thanks to its subject. 'Ishqiya' on the other hand has been average vis-a-vis 'Rann'. It is an ordinary affair with local appeal. Though the masses are watching it but the film is not for everyone because some are finding it a bit cheap," said Mahajan.
"Surprisingly, 'Ishqiya' is performing better in multiplexes and not in B and C sectors. We are expecting it to earn an average Rs.2 crore overall in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh," he added.
Distributed in India by Boney and Sridevi Kapoor's film and television entertainment company BSK Network and Entertainment Pvt Ltd, "Ishqiya" has been co-produced by Shemaroo Entertainment and Vishal Bhardwaj.
The directorial debut of Abhishek Chaubey, the movie has actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Vidya Balan and Arshad Warsi.
"Rann" on the other hand has been made at a budget of Rs.30 crore and is primarily about the conflict between business and conscience in the electronic media. It features megastar Amitabh Bachchan along with Riteish Deshmukh, Gul Panag and Paresh Rawal.
"The failure of 'Rann' has again given a dud out of Ram Gopal Varma's camp. While 'Ishqiya' has the rustic and poetic appeal very common to Vishal Bhardwaj. No matter whatever the fate, his movies somehow do manage to leave an effect on the audiences' minds," said an industry source.
Expected to stretch for the week, "Ishqiya" now sees competition with Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol's much-awaited first release of the year "My Name Is Khan" releasing Friday.
Directed by Karan Johar, the film marks the coming together of Johar, Shah Rukh and Kajol after nine years after their last outing 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham' (2001).

The story of Katrina Kaif and Catreena

A 15-day old leopard was found near Devankhedi village near Bhopal on January 22nd and was rescued by Van Vihar national park's team. Deepika Padukone doesn't like it short!

Dusky beauty Deepika Padukone, who is playing the central character of a uber cool chick in the film 'Karthik Calling Karthik' had to sacrifice her long tresses to get the modern look for the film. Deepika is seen sporting short hair and is yet looking gorgeous in this eagerly awaited film. But to convince Deepika to cut her hair wasn't an easy job for debut director Vijay Lalwani.
Vijay Lalwani, who had a real tough time convincing Deepika to cut short her hair says, "As Deepika's character is very bold, modern and very outgoing so I thought that her long locks would not go with the character. And initially I was a bit hesitant to approach Deepika for this as for any girl chopping down her long locks would be difficult, as it takes years to grow back to that length again. But at last, I managed to convince her somehow."
Well! Deepika Padukone is looking stunning in her new avatar, her new look will really compliment her performance that is soon to come on 26th February 2010.

Vidya Balan uses her sexuality unabashedly!

Before you get the wrong idea let us clear upfront that we are talking of Vidya Balan's role in the film 'Ishqiya'! The sizzling star who plays a village belle in Abhishek Chaubey's debut directorial venture 'Ishqiya' plays the role of a femme fatal that has been carved out painstakingly by the director only for her!
Discussing Vidya's role at length the director narrates, "'Ishqiya' started as a story of a woman who has the power with her husband at night though all through the day she may slog. It took me a year to write the subject. I followed just what the script dictated as a writer and did not have any actor in mind when I was writing it. 'Ishqiya' is the story of two criminals and a wily widow who lives on fragments in the periphery of the society and the plot functions like a thriller. We explore marital as well as extra-marital betrayal in love. Lust is just one element of the film."
Umm... so what is basically Vidya's role all about?
"Well the film has no social or political message. It is a film about finding love in the least expected of places. Emotional need leads us to search for people," states the director.
And summing up his vision for Vidya's role, he says, "It is a terrible truth that over the years, women have been subjugated and made to play an ornamental role in the male dominated society. In my film, my protagonist uses sexuality as a tool unabashedly."

The name is Malvade, Vidya Malvade!

If you think what's in a name think again, as poor Vidya Malvade has been traumatized by the confusion of her name with the more popular Bollywood actress Vidya Balan.

It so happened that the name game got too much for Vidya to handle when at the shoot of her recent film- Striker, Vidya was put down by none other than a flower delivery guy who thought that the bouquet of flowers meant for Vidya Malvade was actually for Vidya Balan!
Obviously Vidya who was used to receive a bouquet of flowers from her husband daily was outraged when the delivery guy refused to hand over the bouquet he thought was meant for Vidya Balan. The pretty lady had to frown a little bit to tell the delivery boy about the rightful owner of the bouquet, but ever since then it became a standard joke in the Striker crew.
And thereafter, the flower delivery guys were directed to Vidya's room with the instruction to refer to her as Balan at least once!

On his recent visit on the sets of the dance reality show Lux 'Dance India

Big B who was on the set to promote his forthcoming 'Teen Patti' shared some sweet memories with the dancing star.
The duo had several beautiful memories to choose from and got very nostalgic as they shared anecdotes with the audience from the good old times- be it their bonding on the sets of the blockbuster Agneepath or the time when Mithun Da had slashed his chest and offered his blood to Goddess kali praying for Bachchan's speedy recovery post his much-talked-about Coolie accident.

Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan bond over controversies

Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan may be enemies in real life but it seems that they are bonded by controversy created by various sections of society.

Apparently it seem that all is not well with Salman Khan's ambitious film 'Veer' in the pink city of Jaipur as a certain Rajput Sena Karni is opposing its screening. They have claimed that the film has some scenes that convey misconception about Rajasthan and its people and therefore it has hurt their sentiments. Protesters from Rajput Sena Karni have also stopped the screening of film midway in a theater in Jaipur and have damaged the theatre properties to show agitation.
While, Salman is harassed by Rajput Sena Karnis, the other Khan, Shahrukh is in no less trouble as his statement over including Pakistani players in IPL teams has brewed trouble with the moral police of Shiv Sena.
Shiv Sena's news publication 'Daily Saamana' claims that Shahrukh has no grief over the lives lost in the 26/11 blasts, which were carried out by terrorist from across the border (Pakistan). Therefore Shiv Sainiks in retaliation to SRK's statement set fire to the poster of his upcoming film 'My Name is Khan' and further threatened theatre owners with the dire consequence of setting the theater ablaze if they screen the film.
Salman's movie was already in a pit and this controversy has put a lid on it, while SRK's film is yet to release and it is only a matter of time to see if this controversy becomes a setback for the film or gives publicity.
