New Delhi, Jan 29 : It is a film with the television news operations in the National Capital as its backdrop.
Not surprisingly, then, the premiere of 'Rann', maverick filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma's take on the satellite news channels in India, was held in the Capital last night.
Lending glitter to the premiere was superstar Amitabh Bachchan, who stars in the film along with Riteish Deshmukh, Gul Panag, Paresh Rawal, South Indian actor Sudip and Rajat Kapoor. He was accompanied by wife Jaya Bachchan, son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya.
Also present on the occasion was the director of the film Ram Gopal Varma, while actor Viveik Oberoi made a late entry at the premiere.
Speaking to reporters at the Red Carpet, Bachchan reiterated that 'Rann' was not an ''anti-media film''.
''Rann is not an attempt to show media in a negative light.
It is a film where media plays a central role. In fact, media is just a character in the movie around which the story revolves,'' senior Bachchan told mediapersons on the occasion.
The superstar said he had immense respect for the media.
''I respect the media and feel that media is the conscience of the country. However, the medium of the media is very strong which puts a lot of responsibility on mediapersons as to what they report,'' Big B quipped.
Rann is about the dilemmas that confront mediapersons when they want to report the truth about an event but are told by their seniors that a particular event be presented in a certain manner to garner TRPs. The film brings to the fore such a situation and whether the mediapersons should show the truth or present a news in an untruthful manner in a bid to garner TRPs for their channel.
In Rann, senior Bachchan plays the role of Vijay Harshvardhan Malik, the owner of a news channel whose words have been the ''voice of truth'', for the people of the country for the last several years.
The film shows how, Malik is forced to lie under pressure on his channel, which is seen and believed by lakhs of people across the country and led to a series of events following that.
How he (Malik) emerges from the situation is what the flick is all about.
